Dr. Brian Smith's Resume  


Dr. Brian C. Smith founded Spectros Associates in 1992. He has practiced spectroscopy for over 20 years, and has worked for companies such as Bell Labs and Bio-Rad. Dr. Smith is also an experienced trainer, thousands of people have benefited from his spectroscopy and software training over the past decade. Dr Smith is the author of three popular books on spectroscopy; Fundamentals of FTIR and Infrared Spectral Interpretation, published by CRC Press, and Quantitative Spectroscopy: Theory and Practice, published by Academic Press. Dr. Smith earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Dartmouth College, and graduated summa cum laude from Rochester Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Chemistry.

Dr. Smith has been active in promoting the profession of spectroscopy including

  • Serving his second term as a member of the Governing Board of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS)
  • Currently serving as the Treasurer for the New England Section of the SAS, and has also served the section as Secretary and Chairperson
  • Chairman of the Coblentz Society Williams-Wright Award Committee for 2009 and 2010
  • Past Chair of the SAS Lester Strock Award and Tour Speaker Committees
